Born out of a sunset-soaked acid trip, ‘Lysergic Snack Bar’ sees Matthewdavid weave a devotional record to calm and soothe. Layering electric zither sounds into surreal soundscapes, the EP was made to mark the passing of avant-garde ambient composer Ariel Kalma, with a slow-shifting tribute that evokes the beauty of dusk and dawn.

Matthewdavid’s first record for Sources was recorded in Death Valley in a 1970’s baseball concession stand. Watching the light move and the space outside transform, the artist braided together five tracks of meditative music in tribute to a personal hero. In MatthewDavid’s words, Ariel was a composer “unafraid to be joyous, ecstatic.” That same approach gives listeners a selection of snackable melodies and inner-space transmissions, from a master of the craft.

Matthewdavid is a Los Angeles-based composer and producer whose work weaves ambient music, devotional listening and community ritual into a singular practice. He is the founder of Leaving Records, the cult LA imprint championing an all-genre, all-ages approach to underground music for over a decade.

Los Angeles, USA

He has performed live with André 3000 and the New Blue Sun band, contributed to the record itself, and has collaborated with Flying Lotus over many years. Earlier in his career he signed artists to Stones Throw Records and co-produced Sudan Archives’ first two EPs.

Beyond the studio, Matthewdavid is known for organising radical daytime, all-ages artist community events in LA’s public parks, rooted in the belief that experimental music should be shared in daylight as much as in the club.
