Born out of a sunset-soaked acid trip, ‘Lysergic Snack Bar’ sees Matthewdavid weave a devotional record to calm and soothe. Layering electric zither sounds into surreal soundscapes, the EP was made to mark the passing of avant-garde ambient composer Ariel Kalma, with a slow-shifting tribute that evokes the beauty of dusk and dawn.
Matthewdavid’s first record for Sources was recorded in Death Valley in a 1970’s baseball concession stand. Watching the light move and the space outside transform, the artist braided together five tracks of meditative music in tribute to a personal hero. In MatthewDavid’s words, Ariel was a composer “unafraid to be joyous, ecstatic.” That same approach gives listeners a selection of snackable melodies and inner-space transmissions, from a master of the craft.
